SOLO FOR PIGEON

REQUIEM

Concept

“Requiem for Architecture” was premiered 2019 at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. The Elbphilharmonie is a monument that stands in a European tradition of music culture. It strongly resembles steep coastal cliffs, the natural nesting places of pigeons. Outside on the plaza, humans are deploying an acoustic weapon against it – pigeon faeces are corrosive and attack the fabric of a building. But even this monumental edifice will not defy time and eventually fall prey to the natural process of decay. The pigeon is messenger and executer of decay at the same time.

Pigeons are eternal home comers. But they are eternal expelled, too. This ambivalence is a metaphor for humans in a globalized world. Their place is not within a certain culture, but in-between, in transit.
